Frequently Asked Questions
The quick answers to what travellers ask us most before they book.
How does Australian Backpackers work?
We are a comparison and booking service. Search your dates and pick-up location, compare campervans and motorhomes from leading operators side by side, then book the one that suits your trip and budget.
What types of vehicles can I hire?
Lowtop and hightop campervans, motorhomes, and 4WDs with rooftop tents. Each type suits a different group size, budget and style of travel, so use the vehicle guides to find the right fit.
Do I need a special licence?
No special licence is needed for most campervans. A valid standard car licence is enough, and international visitors should also carry an International Driving Permit if their licence is not in English. Check the operator's terms when you book.
What is the minimum age to hire a campervan?
It depends on the operator and the vehicle. Some accept drivers from 18, while others require 21 or 25. Compare options for your age, or ask our team to check for you.
Can I pick up in one city and drop off in another?
Yes. One-way hire is popular for road trips such as Sydney to Cairns or Melbourne to Adelaide. Availability and fees vary by route and season, so compare your dates.
Is a bond or excess required?
Most hires include a refundable bond and an insurance excess. The amounts vary by operator and vehicle, and you can see them before you book.
Can I sleep anywhere in a campervan?
No. Overnight stays are only allowed in designated areas such as holiday parks, campsites and approved free camps. Rules vary by council and state, so always follow local signs.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can, especially for school holidays, Christmas and New Year. Last-minute deals do appear, so it is worth comparing even close to your travel date.
